Liposuction is a type of cosmetic surgery that can improve the way your body looks by removing stubborn pockets of fat in the hips, thighs, abdomen, arms, neck, or other areas.

Liposuction Procedure

Despite careful diet and exercise, some patients are unable to eliminate unwanted pockets of fat from localized area of the body. For these patients, body contouring with liposuction surgery may be an ideal solution.

Liposuction is typically performed an outpatient procedure at a plastic surgery center or other surgical facility. A device known as a cannula is inserted through small incisions in the treatment area and is used to break up and suction away fat cells to create a more sculpted and trim appearance.

After liposuction, patients may experience bruising, swelling, and discomfort. Most patients are able to return to work in about a week, though full results may not be realized for several weeks after your procedure.

Liposuction Candidates

The best candidates for liposuction surgery are individuals who are near their idea weight, but have trouble with pockets of isolated fat. Additionally, patients who are interested in liposuction surgery should be in generally good health, have reasonable expectations about what the treatment can achieve, and have good skin elasticity.

There are many different types of liposuction available, so it is important to you discuss your individual goals with your surgeon to determine which option is best suited to your needs. Some patients may find that combining their liposuction surgery with other cosmetic treatments, such as breast augmentation, can produce more dramatic body contouring results.
