Eyelid Surgery

November 28, 2009 @ 06:18 PM — by unknown

Blepharoplasty, commonly referred to as eyelid surgery, is a popular treatment for improving the appearance of the eye area to achieve a more youthful, rested look.

Procedure Details

Blepharoplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. Depending on the patient's goals, the procedure may be performed to address concerns in the lower eyelid area, the upper eyelid area, or both. Although blepharoplasty is one of the most widely performed plastic surgery procedures, not every patient is considered an ideal candidate for this type of cosmetic surgery.

Blepharoplasty Candidates

Patients interested in eyelid surgery commonly complain of under eye bags, puffy or droopy upper eyelids, excess skin or fat in the eyelid area, and a tired or aged appearance in the eye area. To be considered an ideal candidate for the procedure, a patient with these complaints will also meet several other requirements:

Age Requirements

A candidate for eyelid surgery should be over the age of 18. In general, the average blepharoplasty patient is 35 years old or older. However, in some cases genetics play a part in causing a person to develop hooded or puffy eyelids or under eye bags at an earlier age, and blepharoplasty can be a suitable treatment option for these patients.

General Health

The ideal eyelid surgery candidate will be in good mental, emotional, and physical health. The plastic surgeon will want to review your overall health with you to be sure you are mentally and physically able to undergo surgery.

Reasonable Expectations

An ideal blepharoplasty candidate will have reasonable expectations about the results that can be achieved through the eyelid surgery procedure. If the procedure is not appropriate for the patient's individual goals, the surgeon may suggest an alternate treatment option.

Precluding Conditions

Some medical conditions and diseases might preclude a patient from having blepharoplasty, including: glaucoma, dry eye, graves disease, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or hypertension.
