Breast Reduction

Large pendulous breasts can negatively affect both the physical and emotional well-being of a woman. To restore an attractive appearance to the breasts, as well improve self-confidence, a breast reduction is highly desired by patients at our Wichita practice.

Also known as “reduction mammaplasty,” this type of procedure can treat:

  • Overly large breasts

  • Downward pointing nipples

  • Asymmetrical breasts

Candidates

Women who are best suited for breast reduction are in good physical health and do not smoke. As with any type of procedure, candidates should always have realistic expectations about the final results.

Candidates for reduction mammaplasty typically experience one or more of the following conditions:

  • Shoulder, neck and/or back pain

  • Irritation beneath the breasts (rash)

  • Restriction of physical activity

  • Bra strap indentations

  • Difficulty finding clothes that fit

Breast Reduction Surgery

The entire procedure is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. To make scarring as inconspicuous as possible, incisions are made along the breasts creases and in the breast folds whenever possible. The size of the breasts and the amount of skin and fat tissue present will determine which of the following breast reduction techniques is used:

Traditional Breast Reduction

Traditional breast reduction is ideal for women with excessive amounts of skin and fat tissue in the breasts. An anchor-shaped incision is made around the areola, which extends down into the breast crease and horizontally under the breast fold.

Vertical Breast Reduction

This incision technique is ideal for women with moderate amounts of skin and fat tissue in the breasts. A “lollipop” incision is made around the areola that extends down to the breast crease.

Recovery

After the procedure is complete, the incisions will be bandaged, and a specialized support bra will be placed around the breast area to reduce swelling and bruising. Any discomfort that exists during the first few days can be alleviated by prescribed medication. Bandages are removed after a couple days, and sutures are taken off after about one week. Although your daily routine can be resumed after a few weeks, more strenuous physical activity and exercise should be avoided for at least one month.

Results

The final results of breast reduction will become apparent as swelling and bruising subside over the coming weeks, in which patients are typically very satisfied with their new look. Aside from feeling more confident, women find that they are able wear certain types of clothing and participate in physical activities that were not possible before their breast reduction surgery.
