Liposuction

Liposuction is an effective option for reducing stubborn deposits of fat in the hips, thighs, calves, ankles, chin, neck, abdomen, and upper arms. Liposuction is a popular procedure because it can successfully minimize the appearance of excess subcutaneous fat by targeting specific problem areas. The final result is a leaner, firmer, and more defined body shape.

Best Candidates for Liposuction

The best candidates for liposuction can relate to the following:

  • Have stubborn deposits of fat
  • Are at or near their ideal weight
  • Have good skin elasticity
  • Do not smoke

Potential patients should note that liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure nor a treatment for obesity. While some weight is lost after surgery, the primary goal of the procedure is to contour the body into a firmer silhouette. Liposuction is also not a treatment for cellulite, and it does not remove stretch marks or sagging skin.

Liposuction Techniques

Although many types of liposuction are offered at our Wichita, Kansas plastic surgery office, power-assisted and suction-assisted liposuction are the preferred techniques because they produce sculpted results with minimal side effects like bruising, swelling, discomfort, and numbness. Though other methods are heavily marketed and have slick names (e.g., SmartLipo), they have not been scientifically shown to give better results or cause the skin retraction that they claim.

Suction-Assisted (Traditional) Liposuction

  • Infuses the area with a balanced saline solution with a vasoconstrictor (to minimize bruising) and lidocaine (to decrease pain) before the fat is suctioned out
  • Twilight or general anesthesia

Power-Assisted Liposuction

  • Traditional liposuction using an oscillating cannula head to help sculpt the tissues
  • Twilight or general anesthesia

Laser-Assisted Liposuction (Smartlipo)

  • A laser fiber targets and dissolves the fat cells and supposedly causes skin contraction
  • Local anesthesia

Ultrasonic-Assisted Liposuction (UAL)

  • Ultrasound waves break up the fat in a process called cavitation before it is suctioned out
  • General anesthesia

Recovery Time

Liposuction is typically performed as an outpatient procedure, and most patients can return to non-strenuous activities in as little as one week. Immediately after the procedure, patients should arrange for someone to drive them home and care for them for the first day. Compression garments should be worn to reduce swelling and help the body conform to its new shape.
