Abdominoplasty

A trim, toned tummy is the focus for many people when working to improve their figure. Genetics, aging, pregnancy, and significant weight fluctuations change the appearance of the body, particularly in the abdominal area. Sagging skin, weakened muscles, and stubborn fat deposits can leave the stomach looking unflattering, and it can be challenging to correct these imperfections. Some can successfully restore their slender figure by maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle. However, if a healthy, varied diet and consistent exercise have not yielded the expected results, there are still solutions available. Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck surgery, can restore a slender stomach and enhance the natural contours of the midsection.

Candidates

Abdominoplasty is appropriate for patients who have excess tissue around their belly. After significant shifts in weight, the skin can lose elasticity making it difficult to form tightly against the underlying musculature of the abdomen. Candidates may also experience abdominal muscle weakness, a common side effect of pregnancy and extreme weight gain. Patients with a moderate amount of belly fat can also find abdominoplasty effective at restoring their shape.

Procedure

Mini Tummy Tuck

Patients with mild skin laxity on the lower portion of the abdomen can benefit from a mini tummy tuck procedure. Dr. Conrad creates one single incision horizontally along the pubic area. The skin is pulled down and tightened along the body’s natural contours before the excess skin is trimmed. The incision is closed with sutures.

Full Tummy Tuck

Patients with significant excess skin and tissue around the abdomen may qualify for a full tummy tuck procedure. One incision is created along the pubic area, and a second incision is placed around the navel. Localized fat deposits are then removed, underlying muscles are repaired as necessary, and the skin is stretched and tightened over the body’s curves. The incision is closed with sutures.

Combination Procedure

Abdominoplasty alone does not remove all excess fat deposits. If there is a considerable amount of fat in the abdominal area, combining a tummy tuck with liposuction may be necessary to achieve optimal results. Liposuction utilizes vacuum suction technology and a microcannula to precisely extract pockets of fat. Before the abdominoplasty portion of the procedure, Dr. Conrad can perform liposuction to produce enhanced body contouring effects in and around the treatment area.

Recovery

After the procedure, the incisions are wrapped, and a compression garment is placed around the treatment site. This garment aids in healing by minimizing swelling and bruising. Experiencing some soreness and discomfort is expected, but these side effects can be managed with prescription pain medication. Most patients return to work and resume their daily routine after one week, but more strenuous activities should be avoided until Dr. Conrad has approved them.

Results

Abdominoplasty results become increasingly noticeable as the swelling and bruising subside. While the outcome of tummy tuck surgery is considered permanent, pregnancy and any additional shifts in weight following the procedure can alter the appearance of the abdomen.
