Microdermabrasion

Scarring, discolorations, sun damage, and stretch marks are all side effects of time and aging. Often, no amount of heavy creams or at-home treatments can correct these signs of aging. Even makeup can be no match against concealing these dreaded marks on the skin. This is why many people opt for cosmetic surgery treatments, such as microdermabrasion, to reverse the effects of aging and sun exposure. Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive procedure that can help achieve a younger-looking complexion.
Microdermabrasion Can Correct the Following:

  • Age spots
  • Blackheads
  • Hyperpigmentation (patches of dark skin)
  • Stretch marks
  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Enlarged pores
  • Acne
  • Acne scars

Candidates

Those who would like to correct stretch marks, discolorations, sun damage, or light scarring may be good candidates for microdermabrasion. The condition of the skin and the results a patient is hoping to achieve will help determine whether microdermabrasion is the ideal treatment for him or her. Typically, a person who is in good health will benefit the most from microdermabrasion treatment.

Procedure

Microdermabrasion works by gently sanding the skin to remove the thick, uneven layers. Collagen is a protein that helps the facial skin look taut and soft, and collagen production declines over time, resulting in lax, uneven skin. Microdermabrasion will increase collagen production in the skin, which results in skin that appears tight and smooth.

By using microparticles and a diamond-tipped wand, the top layer of the skin is removed, which will stimulate new skin growth. The patient may feel minor scratching; this is the exfoliating crystals coming from the machine and removing the damaged skin cells.

Recovery

What’s great about microdermabrasion treatment is that it can be performed quickly as an in-office procedure, and there is no downtime or recovery required. Minor bruising may be apparent the first few days after the procedure, which is caused by suction during the treatment. For the first few days, the face may also be red and swollen, and the skin will be flaky and dry.

Results

Patients can expect a fresh, new look after the procedure and, depending on the severity of skin damage and the number of treatments received, should experience long-lasting results. To maintain the results of microdermabrasion treatment, it is recommended that patients avoid sun exposure, always use sunscreen, and follow a healthy skincare regimen.

Many people choose to enhance their microdermabrasion results by combining it with other cosmetic procedures. Some of these include wrinkle-reducing injectables, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic, RADIESSE®, and JUVEDERM®. When performed with microdermabrasion, these treatments can provide an overall more radiant and youthful complexion.
