Rhinoplasty

Deformities, along with the natural aging process, can negatively affect the look of the nose. These can not only cause a less attractive facial appearance, but they can also diminish a person’s self-esteem. Rhinoplasty can restore a person’s confidence by effectively altering the shape of the nose to put it in better harmony with the rest of the face. Commonly known as “nose surgery,” rhinoplasty can also improve internal nasal problems that cause breathing difficulties.

Nose surgery can be performed to correct one or more of the following:

  • Wide tip, bridge, or nostrils
  • A drooping or bulbous nasal tip
  • A hump or indentation on the bridge of the nose
  • A deviated septum or other nasal airway blockages

Wichita facial plastic surgeon Dr. Matthew Conrad regularly performs rhinoplasty for women, men, and young adults.

Good Candidates for Rhinoplasty

Ideal candidates for rhinoplasty are healthy individuals who do not smoke and are at least 18 years of age, although younger patients may be candidates as well. As with any surgery, patients should have realistic expectations about the outcome of their rhinoplasty procedure.

The Procedure

Rhinoplasty is usually completed on an outpatient basis using either local or general anesthesia. Dr. Conrad will determine whether the open or closed technique will be more beneficial based on each patient’s unique conditions.
Open
During open rhinoplasty, an incision is made across the columella (the thin strip of tissue between the nostrils), and this is joined with incisions inside the nose. The tissues inside are gently lifted, giving Dr. Conrad access to reshape the underlying structures much like you might lift the hood of a car to see what needs to be done. Once the desired nose shape is achieved, the tissues are placed back over the nose, and the incisions are closed with sutures.
Closed
A closed rhinoplasty involves incisions on the inside of the nose, through which the mucosa (inner lining of the nose) is lifted and the cartilage and bone are reshaped and redistributed. The mucosa is then placed over the remaining tissues. Sutures are used to close the incisions.

Recovery

Directly after rhinoplasty is complete, tapes and a splint are placed on the outside of the nose. In rare cases, splints and packing will be placed inside the nose. Minimal pain and discomfort may exist during the first few days after surgery and can be alleviated by prescribed medication. Movement should be limited for the first couple of days, and the head should also be elevated at all times to speed up the healing process. Generally, patients feel like themselves about a week after surgery and can return to work around at the time.

Results

Rhinoplasty produces long-lasting results that become more evident over the coming weeks and months as swelling subsides and the nose returns to its normal state. Patients are usually extremely pleased with their “new look” and at times are amazed by how dramatically the appearance of their nose has improved.
