A woman discussing breast implants with a doctor

Women preparing for breast augmentation face numerous choices, from the size to the placement of their implants. Fortunately, your plastic surgeon will walk with you through the decision-making process to ensure your breast augmentation results meet your expectations. This blog also outlines the different brands and types of breast implants to help you select the right implants for your surgery.

Breast Implants by Brand

Every breast implant brand offers unique qualities, allowing patients and their surgeons to customize breast augmentations for the most natural results. Dr. Conrad offers all the major brands available, ensuring his patients have ample choices for breast enhancement.

Mentor®

Mentor® is an established brand with clinical studies on its implants dating back three decades. The company offers round saline and silicone (MemoryGel®) implants, as well as a teardrop-shaped cohesive gel (MemoryShape®) implant. Mentor® also produces a microtextured implant that is particularly useful for women seeking breast reconstruction since textured implants offer greater stability in the implant pocket.

Sientra®

Sientra® focuses on state-of-the-art silicone implants in both round and teardrop shapes. They are known for high-strength gel implants that offer a firm yet natural feel and low rupture rates. They come in smooth and textured options. Sientra® initially offered its implants only to board-certified plastic surgeons, developing a reputation for quality in both the implants and the implantation process.

Motiva®

Motiva® is a newer brand on the U.S. market, but it developed a global reputation before its U.S. launch, with use in over 85 countries. Motiva® produces silicone implants known for their natural feel and ergonomic design. The “ergonomic” designation means the implant adjusts to body position, appearing round when lying down and teardrop-shaped when standing. These implants integrate an RFID chip that allows doctors to detect potential ruptures.

Natrelle®

This brand offers a vast range of options, with more than 300 implants to choose from. Natrelle® includes highly cohesive gel implants, known as gummy bear implants, that offer a natural feel and shape retention. The company also offers saline and other silicone options, allowing patients to select the implant that best suits their desired softness or firmness. Smooth and BIOCELL® (textured) implants are available in round and teardrop shapes across five profiles.

Saline vs. Silicone Implants

One factor that will impact the breast implant brand you choose is whether you want saline or silicone implants. Saline implants, available from Mentor® and Natrelle®, consist of silicone shells filled with sterile saline once the implant is placed in the breast pocket. Silicone breast implants come pre-filled with silicone gel inside the silicone shell.

Implant Size, Shape, and Projection

Implants come in many sizes, measured in cubic centimeters rather than bra cup sizes. Implants also vary in the diameter of their base and the amount of projection from the chest wall. Patients can also choose between round and teardrop shapes.

While so many choices can feel overwhelming, the variety allows patients to select the implant that best meets their desired shape, cleavage definition, and upper pole fullness. Your surgeon will help you select the ideal implant based on your body proportions and desired outcome. Dr. Conrad also encourages patients to use the MENTOR™ Breast Implant Simulator App to visualize their potential outcome.

What Is the GalaFLEX™ Internal Bra?

Dr. Conrad may also add the GalaFLEX™ internal bra for women who are concerned with drooping or “bottoming out” after breast augmentation. This biocompatible mesh is placed during your surgical breast enlargement to serve as an internal bra, raising and strengthening the natural breast tissue. The body gradually absorbs the mesh, leaving patients with a natural internal support system that maintains a perky, youthful breast contour.
