Brow Lift or BOTOX® Cosmetic? How to Know Which One You Need

forehead-wrinklesA common sign of facial aging is the development of fine lines and sagging skin around the eyes. In particular, the area between the brows may form vertical furrows that seem permanently etched in the skin. If you have observed these aging signs on your face, a brow lift or BOTOX® Cosmetic could help you achieve a more youthful, rejuvenated appearance.

Who Needs BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a facial injectable that is injected into the face to minimize wrinkles. The substance contained in BOTOX® Cosmetic is made from botulinum toxin type A, which blocks the facial muscles from contracting so that expression lines will smooth themselves out. BOTOX® Cosmetic can treat crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles, and frown lines, but it cannot treat sagging skin. Patients who have moderate to severe wrinkles in these areas may be excellent candidates for BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments. Candidates may also be young, even in their twenties, and seeking to minimize wrinkles early on before they become more prominent. This anti-aging treatment can reduce facial wrinkles and give patients a more youthful appearance without any surgery. BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments should be repeated every four to six months to maintain the results.

Who Needs a Brow Lift?

Brow lift surgery, also known as forehead surgery or a forehead lift, is a procedure that surgically raises the eyebrows to correct brow sagging and eliminate wrinkles. Surgical repositioning of the brows reduces prominent forehead wrinkles and creates a more relaxed and refreshed brow line. Most candidates for this procedure are over age 40 and have severe forehead wrinkles, frown lines, sagging forehead skin, and sagging brows as well as a perpetually sad, tired, or angry expression. For a rare subset of patients, a brow lift is medically necessary because sagging brows are interfering with their ability to see. This surgical procedure can reduce facial wrinkles and give you a more youthful, relaxed, and approachable appearance with long-lasting results.

Choosing Between These Procedures

While these treatments correct some of the same signs of aging, they are not interchangeable and are often complementary. For instance, patients who need correction for sagging brows will need a brow lift, not BOTOX® Cosmetic, whereas patients who have moderate or minimal forehead and brow wrinkles should consider BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments.
