You’ve had enough. You’ve been exercising regularly and diligently eating well, and you still can’t get rid of those stubborn love handles or bra bulge. trying to eliminate those pesky pockets of fat. You’ve done your research and discovered that the best course of action is liposuction surgery. However, before committing, you likely want to know how the recovery time will fit into your busy schedule. In this blog, we’ll go over the basics of liposuction recovery, so you can plan confidently and focus on the excitement of enjoying your smoother, slimmer figure.

How Long Is the Recovery Period After Liposuction Surgery?

The initial recovery period after liposuction surgery typically lasts one to two weeks, depending on the size and number of areas treated and the amount of fat removed. You will likely be able to return to light activities or desk work within several days; however, more strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least three to four weeks, or until Dr. Conrad clears you.

You will experience swelling, bruising, and mild soreness during the first few days of recovery, but any discomfort can be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. You’ll likely be required to wear a compression garment for several weeks to help minimize swelling, support healing tissues, and help shape your new contours. While you may feel significantly better within the first two weeks after your liposuction procedure, subtle swelling typically comes and goes for several months as your body continues to heal internally.

What to Expect Each Week During Liposuction Recovery

Week 1

You can expect swelling, bruising, and moderate soreness. You will wear your compression garments continuously, and while rest is encouraged, you should also take short, slow walks during the day to boost circulation.

Week 2

Bruising begins to fade, and any discomfort you’re experiencing improves significantly. You can typically return to work at this time, provided your job is not physically demanding. Swelling continues but is gradually decreasing.

Weeks 3–4

By this point in your liposuction recovery, you may be cleared for light exercise and feel well enough to gradually resume your normal daily routine. Swelling continues to decrease, and your newly slimmer contours will become more visible.

Weeks 6 and Beyond

Once you reach this stage in your recovery, swelling is almost completely resolved. The areas treated with liposuction feel softer, scars begin to fade, and your curves continue to become more evident. You can typically return to all types of exercise activities without restriction, as long as Dr. Conrad clears you to do so.

When Will I See My Complete Liposuction Results?

You’ll likely notice an improvement in body shape within the first few weeks after your liposuction surgery, but your final liposuction results take time to develop. While a significant portion of swelling resolves within 6–8 weeks, subtle residual swelling can take 3–6 months (sometimes longer) to fully disappear.

Your complete liposuction results are typically visible around the 3–6 month mark, once your tissues have settled and your skin has retracted to hug your new contours. Your liposuction results are designed to be long-lasting, provided you maintain a stable weight through healthy habits.

Dr. Conrad only offers liposuction in combination with another procedure, such as a tummy tuck or body lift. With these specific pairings, it can take 6–12 months to see your final results.
