Lip Augmentation

Lip augmentation is a procedure that can enhance the shape and size of the lips. Patients who have naturally thin lips or whose lips have lost volume and smoothness due to aging can undergo lip augmentation to improve the appearance of their lips. Dr. Conrad performs lip augmentation with soft tissue fillers or with fat grafting.

Candidates

Candidates for lip augmentation should have no major health conditions. They should also have realistic goals and a desire to improve the appearance of their lips.

Procedure

Lip augmentation can be performed non-surgically with soft tissue fillers or surgically with fat grafting. At your consultation, Dr. Conrad and his team of trained professionals will discuss the pros and cons of each procedure and help pick which one will be best for you.

Fillers

Patients who are interested in non-surgical treatments can undergo lip augmentation with injectable fillers. Dr. Conrad or a nurse injector with expert training will inject a hyaluronic acid filler into your lips to increase their volume and enhance their appearance, shape, and smoothness. Results are immediately visible and leave no scars. Lip augmentation with fillers takes only a few minutes and has a short recovery period. There is usually swelling associated with lip injection that lasts about two days. Follow-up treatments are necessary every six to twelve months to maintain results.

Fat Grafting

Fat grafting is an alternative lip augmentation technique that may be used, particularly if a patient desires other facial procedures such as a facelift, neck lift, brow lift, eyelid lift, or laser surfacing. Fat is harvested with liposuction, which provides the additional benefit of treating areas resistant to diet and exercise to create more slender body contours. The fat is purified and then may be placed both in the body of the lip for more volume and in the fine vertical lines that border the lip with a technique called SNIF (soft needle intradermal fat grafting).

Recovery and Results

The recovery experience for lip augmentation is relatively rapid. With fillers, there is very minimal downtime and recovery. Fillers produce immediately visible results that can be maintained with future injections. If any swelling is present, the results will become more visible as it diminishes. The recovery period after fat grafting is a little longer because liposuction is involved, and patients are usually able to return to work within one week. Fat grafting results are immediately noticeable and will continue to provide lasting enhancement.
